The Off-Cut Challenge
11am-6pm, 13-15 September 2019
Deptford Market Yard
London SE8 4BX
In celebration of our tenth anniversary, Aldworth James & Bond will host The Off-Cut Challenge, an exhibition showcasing the work of our team, as part of the South East Makers Club and London Design Festival.
The exhibition highlights the importance of responsible fabrication and encourages a new look at how waste material can be used. The space will also include live CNC demonstrations and giveaways, encouraging everyone to get hands-on and enjoy the art of making.
We challenged our crew to work in teams to utilise the off-cuts to create well finished, useful objects. Our skilled teams consists of technical designers, makers and finishers, project and production managers, and tradespeople. Using only waste material, including birch plywood and Valchromat, groups will make objects that demonstrate digital fabrication and traditional hand skills. Groups will then be judged during the London Design Festival by an external panel.
Production is at the heart of what we do. Integral to this is the sustainability of the work and impact on the environment. Ensuring all materials are sourced from responsible suppliers, we efficiently nest material to minimise waste and responsibly transport products for installation. A degree of off-cuts is unavoidable and this is why we were inspired to create a new opportunity for waste materials to be used.
